Generating power locally

Can we generate more power locally rather than in huge power stations?

Many alternative forms of energy are best produced where they are needed. Solar power and hydrogen fuel cells are examples.

Northmoor Trust's bale bioler
The Northmoor Trust’s Hill Farm complex demonstrates small-scale on-site sustainable energy production using local resources. A bale boiler provides heating and hot water by burning straw bales (biomass) from the Trust’s estate. It will consume some 6-700 bales per year. As the straw is a waste product this fuel can be considered carbon-neutral.
