The future of local farming

Cheap food - but how far has it travelled?
Food prices have been kept low by efficiently packaging and distributing food from large central facilities (eg in Didcot) in large vehicles to large supermarkets. Over 25% of heavy goods vehicles on roads in the UK are transporting food products. That's a lot of pollution, CO2 emissions, congestion and road accidents all caused just from food transportation.

The future of biofuel crops
Fuel crops such as coppiced wood, oilseed rape or elephant grass (miscanthus) are likely to become more important than food crops in the future. Given the proximity of Didcot power station, fuel crops could be a significant feature of the future local landscape.
