The History
The idea behind ‘Trafalgar Woods’ originated with the Woodland Trust. 2005 was the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar when the British navy under Lord Nelson defeated the combined navies of France and Spain.
The Woodland Trust is working with the Society for Nautical Research (SNR) to mark the occasion. The Trafalgar Woods project formed part of the Trafalgar Festival, endorsed by the Official Nelson Commemoration Committee and Sea Britain, 2005.

‘The Trafalgar Woods education programme is believed to be the only national education element of the Trafalgar celebrations. The programme aims, for each Trafalgar Wood, to involve a child in planting trees for each member of the crew (5-800 children involved per wood). In addition, the programme provides a range of resources and supporting materials to enable all schools to undertake either commemorative planting, or to structure lessons based on the battle and the historical context’.
