Council funds attractive new entrance at Mowbray Fields

South Oxfordshire District Council officially opened the new entrance at Didcot’s Mowbray Fields on 28 April, as part of its work to make environmental improvements around the town.

The event celebrated the beautifully crafted oak gate and new fencing, funded and installed by the council at the nature reserve.

The council’s Chairman, Cllr Pat Dawe, gave a speech, and St Birinus pupil Michael Davey, who was the lucky winner of a young person’s competition to officially open the new entrance, marked the occasion with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

People were treated to an informative nature walk around the nature reserve, guided by the council’s Countryside Officer and representatives from the Northmoor Trust, whilst the younger ones were amused with a bouncy castle.

Local residents and members of the Didcot Community Forum told South Oxfordshire District Council that a new entrance to the fields was a priority for them. So, as part of the council’s ongoing commitment to environmental improvements in Didcot, it commissioned Philip Clayden to create the lovely new gate.

South Oxfordshire District Council’s Chairman, Cllr Pat Dawe, said:

“This is a wonderful improvement to an open space that many people already use and enjoy. I hope that the inviting new entrance will encourage more people to visit Mowbray Fields and enjoy what the space has to offer.”

South Oxfordshire District Council has owned the Mowbray Fields since the 1980’s and the Northmoor Trust currently manages it on their behalf.
