Countryside Stewardship: Animal Husbandry

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The learner will be able to know that livestock are kept on reserves and conservation sites for management purposes.

The learner will know the basics of good animal husbandry.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The learner has achieved this outcome because s/he can:

1. Demonstrate an awareness that livestock are kept on reserves and conservation sites:

  • to improve grassland
  • to provide an income from sales of wool, meat, milk
  • for breeding replacement.
  • 2. Identify 2 potential causes of conflict between conservation and farming.
    3. Identify the male female and young, in the field.
    4. Describe the key differences between three breeds.
    5. Explain the breeding cycle using appropriate terminology.
    6. Demonstrate an awareness that young animals need special care and identify what action should be taken in relation to 3 signs of ill health e.g. diarrhoea, lack of vitality, not feeding from the mother.
    7. Demonstrate an awareness that all animals should be treated with respect.
