FarmStep

FarmStep is an initiative to foster land based enterprises by inviting entrepreneurial entrants into farming to set up business on Trust land.

FarmStep is specifically targeted at people who are currently locked out of farming by the cost of land and rural housing.

The Trust is inviting proposals from prospective tenants for use of land and infrastructure on its 300 hectare estate.

FarmStep businesses will be practically and financially independent of the Trust but will benefit from favourable terms in their tenancy agreement.

As well as needing to present a credible business case, potential FarmStep entrants will be selected against 3 criteria:

Environment
Will the farming techniques and the business model bring habitat benefits for the estate and will they represent clear environmental benefits in terms of resource use and reduction in carbon emissions.

Community
Will the farm system and business model bring people in surrounding communities into a closer relationship with land and with the people and processes associated with food production?

Complementarity
Does the business fit in well with other enterprises operating on the Trust estate? Does it diversify the estate? Will it bring added benefits to existing enterprises and Trust activities?
